Need info on US effort with ARVN from 1966

My father is a vietnam veteran who does not like to talk about his experiences in Vietnam because he hates to relive it. I'm trying to find out what happened in vietnam in 1966 when the US army soldiers joined the Army Republic of Vietnam in an effort during the war. He was one of those army soldiers.

All I know is my dad got a purple heart and he saw some traumatic events (I've recently convinced him to file for PTSD benefits - now some 40 years later).

What happened in that year with that group?
What did the soldiers experience?
How did it affect you if you were in it?
And any other details you can provide.

My father and I didn't have a good relationship until my late twenties - this was mostly because he was a violent person that reacted harshly to just about everything. I believe that Vietnam made him that way. I'm just now starting to see the person/father that really existed before the war.

Please help me figure out what changed him so drastically. He doesn't want to relive it so he won't tell me.
