History of the Vietnam War 101

An on-line discussion forum on the history of the war in Vietnam

Presented by Edwin Moise, Ph.D

Note: Dr Bob Blackburn, VN101 Emeritus, has left for medical and personal reasons. He was the founding father of this forum, and a damn fine Vietnam Veteran and scholar. We will miss him. The forum is in good hands with Dr. Ed and all those who help to answer questions about the Vietnam War. Dr. Bob will take individual questions from time to time. He can be reached at drrblack@neto.com

From Dr. Edwin Moise:

Greetings to all Vietnam Veterans, teachers, students, scholars, and anyone else who just wants or needs some specific information on the Vietnam War.

My name is Ed Moise; I am a professor of history at Clemson University, in South Carolina. I cannot answer all questions, but there are a lot I can answer, and I will give it my best shot.

I got my Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan in 1977, specializing in modern China and Vietnam. Originally my scholarly work was focussed on political and economic history, but I had been interested in the Vietnam War since 1963, and in the early 1980s the war also became the center of my scholarly work. By now I know quite a lot about many aspects of the war. My personal specialty is the Tonkin Gulf incidents of 1964; I published a book on Tonkin Gulf in 1996. For further information about me see my Vita.

The biggest difference between me and Dr. Bob is that I am not a veteran; I dodged the draft, by joining the Peace Corps and going to Southeast Asia as a teacher (History, Math, English, and Economics, junior high to junior college). I didn't set foot in Vietnam until 1985. My Vietnamese is lousy; I don't speak it at all, and I read it only with great difficulty, and help from a dictionary. For a number of years I have been working on a large Bibliography of the Vietnam War. People trying to identify sources on almost any aspect of the Vietnam War should find something useful somewhere in this. I look forward to working with you.
